What is my Smith & Wesson Model 19 and 66 worth?
The .357 Magnum built on a medium frame, carried by police for a generation and sought by collectors now. The 19 is blued and the 66 is stainless, and both reward being identified properly.
Made 1957–present.
No page can price your gun, and one that offers to is guessing. What this does is show you which one you have — because that is where the money is.
How to tell which one you have
- Check whether the finish is blue, which indicates a Model 19, or stainless, which indicates a 66.
- Look for the pinned barrel and recessed chambers that indicate earlier production.
- Read the barrel length, which is a substantial part of the value.
- Look for department markings and whether the original box and tools survived.
The versions that change the number
| Version | What it means for value |
|---|---|
| Model 19 1957–1999 | The blued version. Early pinned and recessed guns are the sought-after ones. |
| Model 66 1970–2005 | Stainless, and a separate market from the blued guns. |
| Short barrels various | Shorter-barrelled examples were made in smaller numbers and are priced accordingly. |
| Later revived production 2018–present | Modern manufacture. Good revolvers and an entirely separate market. |
What actually drives the price
- Pinned and recessed versus later production.
- Barrel length, where the short ones lead.
- Original finish and whether the gun has been refinished.
- Box, tools and original stocks.
And the two that apply to every gun on this site: do not clean it, and keep the box and papers. Removing original finish is permanent, and on the right gun the packaging is a real part of the total.
"It is a police gun so it is worn out"
These were carried constantly and fired comparatively little, and the wear is usually cosmetic over a sound action. A worn early Model 19 with an honest finish is worth a good deal more than a refinished one that looks new, which is the opposite of what most people assume.
Is a Model 66 worth less than a Model 19?
Not inherently, but they are different markets and the blued guns generally carry more collector interest. Condition, barrel length and production period matter more than the finish type on either one.
