Why we cover the whole state
Because collections do not respect county lines and neither do estates. A family settling a parent's affairs in one part of Michigan frequently finds the guns are at a cottage somewhere else entirely, and the person handling it often lives in a third place. Drawing a radius on a map and refusing anything outside it would mean turning down most of the work worth doing.
So the honest answer to "do you come out this far" is usually yes, and it is not a question to worry about before making contact — that goes for the neighboring states as well as the far side of Michigan. Tell us what you have and where it is, and the logistics are our problem to solve rather than a hurdle you have to clear first.
Michigan has 83 counties and we buy in all of them. The point of the chart is that they are not alike — where the dealers are tells you where the guns have been changing hands for decades.
What that spread actually means
The federal license list is public, and read closely it describes a state with very different firearms cultures in it. Oakland County holds 202 licensed dealers, Macomb 176 and Wayne 130 — but what stands out is how many of those aremanufacturers rather than shops: 53 in Macomb alone, a legacy of the tooling trade that shows up as custom and precision work in private collections.
West Michigan is different again. Kent County holds 129 licenses and Ottawa 76, concentrated around a lakeshore hunting tradition that produces better sporting shotguns than anywhere else in the state. Genesee County has fourteen licensed pawnbrokers, one of the highest counts in Michigan, which means guns there have often changed hands repeatedly and condition varies enormously.
None of that is trivia. It is why an estate in Macomb and an estate in Barry County need to be approached differently, and why a single flat offer against a collection sight-unseen is usually wrong in one direction or the other.
