Buying in Adrian and Lenawee County

Lenawee County holds 30 licensed dealers across fourteen towns, none of them large.

Fourteen towns and no real center: Lenawee is farm country running down to the Ohio line, and its 30 licensed dealers are spread thin across it. Collections here tend to have been assembled slowly and locally over a long time, and they’re often still in the house they were assembled in. That’s good for originality and hard on condition, since a gun in an unheated farmhouse has had a different life from one in a safe.

Lenawee County holds 11 manufacturing licenses alongside its 30 total. That is enough bench work in the area that custom and gunsmithed pieces turn up in ordinary estates here more often than the population would suggest.

The county has no licensed pawnbrokers at all — worth noting, because a pawn counter is where the good pieces usually leave a collection before anybody else sees it.

14 towns share the county's 30 licenses, which is about as scattered as Michigan gets. There is no one place people bought from, so the paper trail on an older collection runs in several directions at once.

What collections look like around here

The southern border counties sit close enough to Indiana that a lot of buying, selling and trading has always happened across the line. Berrien County alone holds 40 licensed dealers. Collections here are mixed and often well-traveled, and it isn’t unusual for a gun in a Michigan estate to have been bought in South Bend or Elkhart.

Estates in Lenawee County

Border estates often involve heirs living out of state, which is the single most common complication we see down here. It’s worth raising early, not discovering it at the point of transfer, because moving firearms across a state line has its own rules and they aren’t the ones that apply within Michigan.

We also cover Tecumseh, Hudson, Morenci, Blissfield, Addison and Clinton — and the rest of Michigan besides. If you have something worth looking at, distance is our problem, not yours.

We’re out in the county, not in Adrian.

Almost everybody is. Tecumseh, Blissfield, Hudson, Morenci and the farms between them are all the same trip, and we would rather come to the house than have anybody move guns around.

One thing worth knowing before anyone looks at it, wherever you are: don’t clean it. A polished or re-blued gun can be worth a fraction of an untouched one, and it can’t be undone.
