Buying in Monroe and Monroe County

Monroe County sits on the Ohio line, and collections here are often a mix of both states.

Thirty-nine licensed dealers across fourteen towns, on a border that people cross without thinking about it. Collections in Monroe County were often bought partly in Toledo and partly in Michigan, which matters more than it sounds — the paper trail runs through two states, and knowing what was bought where helps place the guns in time.

Worth knowing before anybody opens a cabinet in Monroe County: 17 of its 39 licenses are manufacturing licenses, close to half. That puts gunsmith and custom work into local estates at a rate most counties never see, and a rifle somebody built is valued differently from one a factory made.

There is not one pawnbroker licensed in the county. Firearms change hands through dealers and between people who know each other, which tends to mean collections arrive intact rather than picked over.

They are spread thin, too: 39 licenses across 14 separate towns with no single hub. Collections were assembled from several small shops over decades, and half of those shops are gone.

What collections look like around here

The southern border counties sit close enough to Indiana that a lot of buying, selling and trading has always happened across the line. Berrien County alone holds 40 licensed dealers. Collections here are mixed and often well-traveled, and it isn’t unusual for a gun in a Michigan estate to have been bought in South Bend or Elkhart.

Estates in Monroe County

Border estates often involve heirs living out of state, which is the single most common complication we see down here. It’s worth raising early, not discovering it at the point of transfer, because moving firearms across a state line has its own rules and they aren’t the ones that apply within Michigan.

We also cover Dundee, Milan, Carleton, Ida, Ottawa Lake and Newport — and the rest of Michigan besides. If you have something worth looking at, distance is our problem, not yours.

Some of it was bought in Ohio.

That’s normal here and it isn’t a problem. We buy in Ohio as well as Michigan, and a collection assembled either side of the line is one collection as far as we’re concerned.

One thing worth knowing before anyone looks at it, wherever you are: don’t clean it. A polished or re-blued gun can be worth a fraction of an untouched one, and it can’t be undone.
