Buying in Greenville and Montcalm County

Montcalm County spreads 24 licensed dealers across ten towns with only three manufacturers.

Ten towns and no real hub makes Montcalm one of the more scattered counties in west Michigan, and with only three manufacturing licenses it deals almost entirely in guns that were bought, not built. Estates here are working collections — deer rifles, shotguns, rimfires — where the value sits in condition and in whichever older piece someone happened to look after.

With 24 licenses and just 3 manufacturers, Montcalm County deals in working guns. The value in an estate here is usually condition, plus whichever older piece somebody happened to look after properly.

No pawnbroker holds a license anywhere in the county. Guns here move dealer to dealer or hand to hand, and estates are correspondingly more complete than in places with a pawn counter on every other corner.

What collections look like around here

West Michigan is shotgun country before it’s anything else. Kent County holds 129 licensed dealers and Ottawa 76 — the two heaviest concentrations outside metro Detroit — and the collections reflect generations of bird hunting along the lakeshore and the river valleys. Good side-by-sides and over-unders turn up here more often than they do elsewhere in the state, often in far better condition than the family assumes.

Estates in Montcalm County

A lot of west Michigan estates come out of long-settled families where the same guns have been passed down twice already. That’s usually good news for condition and bad news for paperwork — the story of where something came from has often been lost, and it’s worth reconstructing, because provenance on an older gun can be a meaningful part of what it’s worth.

We also cover Stanton, Edmore, Sheridan, Howard City, Lakeview and Carson City — and the rest of Michigan besides. If you have something worth looking at, distance is our problem, not yours.

It’s mostly old hunting guns.

That’s most of what this county produces and it’s worth a look anyway. Older shotguns and lever guns that were used and maintained are worth real money, and the surprises are almost never the guns that look impressive.

One thing worth knowing before anyone looks at it, wherever you are: don’t clean it. A polished or re-blued gun can be worth a fraction of an untouched one, and it can’t be undone.
