The county has no licensed pawnbrokers at all — worth noting, because a pawn counter is where the good pieces usually leave a collection before anybody else sees it.

West Michigan is shotgun country before it’s anything else. Kent County holds 129 licensed dealers and Ottawa 76 — the two heaviest concentrations outside metro Detroit — and the collections reflect generations of bird hunting along the lakeshore and the river valleys. Good side-by-sides and over-unders turn up here more often than they do elsewhere in the state, often in far better condition than the family assumes.
