Buying in Ludington and Mason County
Mason County holds 16 licensed dealers on the lakeshore, seven of them manufacturers.
Seven manufacturing licenses in a county this size is a high proportion and puts more custom and gunsmith work into local estates than the population would predict. Lakeshore and orchard country either side of Ludington, with collections that mix working guns and the occasional piece someone had built properly.
Worth knowing before anybody opens a cabinet in Mason County: 7 of its 16 licenses are manufacturing licenses, close to half. That puts gunsmith and custom work into local estates at a rate most counties never see, and a rifle somebody built is valued differently from one a factory made.
There is not one pawnbroker licensed in the county. Firearms change hands through dealers and between people who know each other, which tends to mean collections arrive intact rather than picked over.
What collections look like around here
West Michigan is shotgun country before it’s anything else. Kent County holds 129 licensed dealers and Ottawa 76 — the two heaviest concentrations outside metro Detroit — and the collections reflect generations of bird hunting along the lakeshore and the river valleys. Good side-by-sides and over-unders turn up here more often than they do elsewhere in the state, often in far better condition than the family assumes.
Estates in Mason County
A lot of west Michigan estates come out of long-settled families where the same guns have been passed down twice already. That’s usually good news for condition and bad news for paperwork — the story of where something came from has often been lost, and it’s worth reconstructing, because provenance on an older gun can be a meaningful part of what it’s worth.
We also cover Scottville, Custer, Free Soil, Walhalla and Fountain — and the rest of Michigan besides. If you have something worth looking at, distance is our problem, not yours.
My father built some of these himself.
Then they need identifying rather than looking up, and it’s worth doing carefully. Mason County has seven licensed manufacturers, so we see bench-built rifles from this area regularly. Bring any paperwork or photographs of the work with them.

One thing worth knowing before anyone looks at it, wherever you are: don’t clean it. A polished or re-blued gun can be worth a fraction of an untouched one, and it can’t be undone.
