Macomb County holds 176 licensed dealers — the second-highest count in the state.

Those 176 licenses sit across 33 towns, and 53 of them are licensed manufacturers — the highest maker concentration anywhere in Michigan. That’s the tooling trade's legacy, and it means Macomb estates contain more custom, modified and precision work than any other part of the state. Macomb is where the tool-and-die trade met the gun trade, and the two never fully separated. Fifty-three manufacturing licenses in one county isn’t an accident: this is where people who could machine things did, and estates here regularly contain a rifle someone built on a Bridgeport in a garage in Sterling Heights. Those guns need identifying rather than looking up, and they’re often worth several times what the family assumed a home-made rifle could be.

South-east Michigan holds the densest concentration of licensed dealers in the state — Oakland County alone has 202, Macomb 176 and Wayne 130 — and an unusual number of them are manufacturers, not shops: better than fifty licensed makers in Macomb, and nearly as many in Oakland. That’s a legacy of the tooling trade, and it shows up in private collections. Metro Detroit turns up more precision-made, modified and custom work than anywhere else in Michigan, alongside the ordinary run of hunting guns.

A house that has been in a family for fifty years often holds three generations of firearms at once: a grandfather's war-era rifles, a father's deer guns, and whatever the current owner bought in the last decade.
